West Bengal has always
been committed to the welfare of its farmers, recognizing their crucial role in
the state’s agricultural sector. In line with this vision, the Government of
West Bengal introduced a significant initiative aimed at improving the lives of
farmers and providing them with necessary support.
In January 2019, the
Department of Agriculture launched the ‘Krishak
Bandhu’ Scheme to offer financial assistance for agricultural purposes and
to ensure social security for farm families in the unfortunate event of a
farmer’s untimely death. Building on its success and with an intent to further
enhance its impact, the scheme has recently been revamped and renamed as
'Krishak Bandhu (Natun).' This updated version of the scheme was officially
unveiled by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal on 17th June 2021.
Direct Benefits: Under the scheme, farmers receive
financial assistance for cultivation purposes, ranging from a minimum of Rs.
4,000 to a maximum of Rs. 10,000 per annum. This amount is disbursed in two
equal installments during the Kharif and Rabi seasons each year. Farmers with 1
acre or more of cultivable land are entitled to the full Rs. 10,000 per annum.
For farmers with less than 1 acre of cultivable land, the assistance is
provided on a pro-rata basis, with a guaranteed minimum of Rs. 4,000 per annum.
Krishak Bandhu
Death Benefit:
As part of the scheme, there is also the 'Krishak Bandhu Death Benefit'
component. In case of the death of a farmer between the ages of 18 and 60
years, the State Government provides a one-time lump sum payment of Rs. 2 lakh
to the family of the deceased, ensuring social security and financial support
to the bereaved family.
Disbursement: The payments are made in two
equal installments, ensuring farmers have regular financial support to carry
out essential agricultural activities. These funds are vital for purchasing
seeds, fertilizers, and other resources necessary for successful crop
production.
